Bài 8. Postal and telecommunications service



On–line (adj): controlled by or connected
to a computer or to the Internet.

Tele /'teli/: over a long distance, far.

Telecommunications /,telikə,mju:ni'kei∫nz/
= telecoms (informal): the technology of
sending signals, images and messages over
long distances by radio, telephone, television,
satellite, etc
Ex: Teleconferencing; telecommuting.


The internet links millions of computers all
over the world and allows your computer to get
information stored on other computers far
away. In 1981, only 213 computers were
connected to the Internet. At the end of 2006,
there were more than one billion Internet users.
No one knows for sure exactly how many
people use the Internet today.

You get on the Internet by joining a computer
network which is called an Internet Service
Provider (ISP). You can hook up to the ISP with a
modem and your home telephone line. This is
called dial-up access. Another way to hook up
to the ISP is with Asymmetric Digital Subscriber
Line (ADSL) or a cable modern, which brings
Web pages to your computer screen much faster
than a dial-up connection.
